So, who is Blossom?

I help families, schools and nurseries develop ways to boost children’s learning at home through play.

Why? Because research has shown time and time again, that the difference parents make is more powerful than all the years in school put together. Yes! Really.

You might think school and nursery are where young children gain most of their education, but learning through play with you transforms a child’s brain!  Let me use my 15 years experience and expertise teaching in Reception to show you how.

Read the Blossom story

I remember my boys starting school like it was yesterday.

Suddenly I went from being the centre of their world to spending large parts of the day not knowing what they were doing. Nursery had key people working with them and they reported in detail at the end of the day. I’m not a helicopter mum at all, but I did find this sudden change really hard to handle.

Then came the first parent’s meeting. The teacher was lovely, but I wasn’t a teacher yet and she talked to me about continuous provision and the characteristics of effective learning… I had no clue WHAT she was on about. I also couldn't understand why she said my boy couldn’t do things at school that I knew he could do at home…

And I come from a family of teachers! My mum was an infant head and my parents ran a business publishing materials for teachers… If I felt lost at sea, then what would parents without that background feel?

This stayed with me as I completed my teacher training and became a Year 1 and then a Reception teacher. Parents I worked with appreciated the extra time I took to explain things, to provide information and to take the time to let them know that I loved their little guys and they would always be safe with me. Some of those parents are still in contact 15 years later!

I don’t ever want parents to feel like I felt at that first parents evening. I want them to feel involved, empowered, to have agency and input in what happens and to feel valued by schools. So I started writing. I wrote everything I wish I’d known as a parent, and everything that I wish the parents of the kids in my classes had known or helped develop. And before long I had a lever arch file bursting at the seams. Blossom was born.

Three years later and Blossom has a parent’s website and a teacher’s website. Our resources, guides and activities show you how to get the most benefit for your kid out of all the time you spend together, and I will always aim for Blossom to be a bridge between families, nurseries and schools. Explaining the confusing things and giving you simple information and inspiration to make your life easier! That’s our promise.

  • Research consistently shows that a parent’s input for 10 minutes a day can add 5 months progress to a child’s learning each year!

  • Over their primary education this can make a difference of 3 years progress over children who receive no parental support

  • Parental support in the early years is twice as effective as any other age as young children are learning faster than at any other point in their lives!
